On this episode, Kristen Hope Schuyten was interviewed. Kristen is a Physical Therapy Clinical Specialist and Performing Arts Rehabilitation Program Coordinator at MedSport Domino’s Farms with Michigan Medicine. Kristen holds her Board Certification through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties in Sports and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Kristen received her undergraduate education from University of Michigan, and her Master’s and Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Central Michigan University.

Kristen performs staff education and training in the evaluation, screening and treatment of Performing Arts patients; coordinates and performs on-site triaging, backstage treatment services, and has established referral network for the School of Music, Theatre and Dance students. She has collaborated in the creation of return to dance post-operative protocol, gymnastic, instrumentalist, and figure skating injury risk screening for these specialized patient populations. For the past ten years, she has coordinated injury risk screening for the departments of Dance, Musical Theatre, Theatre and Drama and Music for the University of Michigan, including analysis of individual screenings and customized exercise prescription. She is currently overseeing development and implementation of programming involving a physical therapy clinic on University of Michigan campus for performing arts students and a training room for figure skater acute injuries inside Detroit Skating Club in Bloomfield, Michigan. Kristen is currently involved in multiple research initiatives with Michigan Medicine including digital applications and integration into patient care. She is on the medical team for Team USA for Figure Skating, supporting the 2018 Olympic Team with physiotherapy coverage in Pyeungchang, South Korea, and the Team USA’s World Figure Skating Team this past March in Saitama, Japan. Kristen was recently named to the Sports Medicine Committee with US Figure Skating as one of the only physical therapists in this role. Kristen has been awarded the Michigan Medicine Learning Catalyst Award for Outstanding Staff Educator and is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and International Association of Dance Medicine and Science, where she has presented poster, scientific and workshop presentations.

Kristen is mom to two little ones, Hope, 3 and Donovan, 5. Both love dancing and performing. She is married to Phil, a former Drum Corps member, and fellow Performing Arts Physical Therapist.
